How It Happened
Rhode Island could not slow down the George Washington offense, falling in three sets in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams Friday night. The Revolutionaries (8-5, 1-0 A-10) won 25-18, 25-23, 25-13 as they hit .358 as a team.

Rhode Island (3-10, 0-1 A-10) managed to convert just 36 percent of its sideout chances in the opening set (9-of-25) and 48 percent in the final set (12-of-25). By contrast, GW was 37-for-55 (67.3 percent) on sideout chances for the match.

Set One – George Washington 25, Rhode Island 18
Holding an 11-8 lead, Rhode Island got three consecutive aces from Ryleigh Powers to extend its lead to 14-8. The run continued with back-to-back attack errors by the Revolutionaries helped Rhody double up GW at 16-8. George Washington responded with a 10-0 run surge ahead 18-16 before a Hannah Jonick kill ended the long run. GW continued its momentum though, pulling ahead 21-17 on an Alexis Rodriguez kill to force Rhody to call its second timeout. Jonick delivered a kill with a touch shot out of the break to get Rhody within three, but George Washington closed out the set with a 4-0 run.

Set Two – George Washington 25, Rhode Island 23
The service game betrayed Rhode Island in the second set. The Rams gave away seven points on the serve with six service errors, including one with George Washington on set point at 24-23. A 7-2 run had Rhody leading 20-17 following an Emma Vente kill. However, the Revolutionaries stormed back behind three kills from Sydney Hasenfratz and two more by Alexis Rodriguez to rally and take a 2-0 lead.

Set Three – George Washington 25, Rhode Island 13
The hosts led from start to finish to easily put the match away. George Washington had 20 kills and just two errors in 31 total swings, hitting .581 as a team. Cayla Cogin and Sydney Hasenfratz each had five kills and Abby Markworth had 17 assists in the set.
