Davidson Rolls Through Rams In Four Sets

Rhode Island Starters
Lalli, Johnson, Melton, Abuto, Richter, Keaney, Henry (L)

Davidson Starters
Smith, Johnson, Compas, Songaila, Young, Garcia-Guerrios, Briscoe (L)

How it Happened
The trio of Ariyana Johnson, Melie Songaila and Elena Garcia-Guerrios combined for 48 kills - one more than Rhode Island had as a team - to lead Davidson to a 3-1 victory over the Rams Friday.

Johnson had 19 kills, while Songeila added 15 and Garcia-Guerrios 14 for the Wildcats (9-12, 2-8 A10). Rhode Island (6-16, 1-9 Atlantic 10) did not have a defensive answer for the Davidson attack, which produced a .321 hitting percentage.

Set One - Davidson 25, Rhode Island 14
Elena Garcia-Guerrios had four kills in six attacks and Davidson hit .550 as a team to dominate the opening set. The Wildcats had six aces and limited URI to nine kills. It was never a competitive set, as the hosts jumped out to a 10-4 lead and steadily built the lead from there.

Set Two - Davidson 25, Rhode Island 20
Ariyana Johnson took over in the second set, recording nine kills with no errors. Rhode Island got out to a 6-2 lead, but Johnson led the comeback for the Wildcats. In addition to her offense, Johnson had two aces in the set. The set was tied as late as 16-16, but the Rams could not keep up down the stretch.

Set Three - Rhode Island 25, Davidson 22
A late surge helped Rhode Island keep the match alive. Trailing 19-18, the Rams went on a 5-0 run. Emily Sawyer, McKenna Melton and KJ Johnson each had a kill during the stretch, and a block by Johnson and Grace Keaney gave Rhody a 23-19 lead. Johnson's fourth kill of the set gave URI set point at 24-20, and after two Davidson points, a service error gave URI the set. Cara Richter had six kills in the stanza for the Rams.

Set Four - Davidson 25, Rhode Island 21
Rhode Island led 7-6 following a Grace Keaney kill. However, Davidson went on a 7-1 run to pull in front 13-8. The Rams responded with a 5-1 spurt to get within a point at 14-13 after a Jahan Lalli ace, but that was as close as the score got. The score stayed tight and Rhody got within one point for a second time after a Wildcat service error made in 21-20. URI was never able to tie the score, and eventually Ariyana Johnson ended the match with her 19th kill of the night.
