How it Happened
A last-minute field goal by
Ty Groff brought the Governor's Cup back to Kingston, as Rhode Island defeated Brown 13-10 Saturday afternoon.
The 110th meeting between the schools was a low-scoring thriller with 17 of the game's 23 points coming in the fourth quarter. Rhode Island (3-3) trailed 10-3 with 13 minutes to go. Brown (1-2) took advantage of a URI turnover deep in its own end. A 1-yard touchdown on a direct snap to Qwentin Brown gave the Bears their first lead of the game.
With scoring at a premium, Rhody needed a big play and got one from All-American wide receiver
Marquis Buchanan. He caught a pass over the middle from
Alex McClelland and took it for 68 yards to the Brown 12-yard line. On the next snap, McClelland scrambled up the middle for a game-tying touchdown. Â Â Â
Both teams punted on their next possessions. Rhody was able to pin Brown at its own 12-yard line with 1:19 to go. With a quick three-and-out, the Rams got the ball back at the Brown 46 with 32 seconds left.
McClelland hit
Jamall Mensah for a 3-yard pass, then found Buchanan for 5 yards. On the Buchanan pass, Brown was penalized for roughing the passer, moving URI up to the Brown 23-yard line. That set up the game-winning field goal from Groff three snaps later, a 43-yard boot that went down the middle.
A last-ditch lateral play went nowhere for Brown, and Rhode Island reclaimed the Governor's Cup.
