How it Happened
Fordham swept Rhode Island in quick fashion, knocking off the host Rams 25-23, 25-14, 25-17 Wednesday night. The visitors never trailed in either the first or third sets and led by at least seven points in all three sets.
Rhode Island (5-12, 0-5 A10) had moments of competitiveness, but it was unable to put up much defense for the night. Fordham hit .341 as a team, collecting 40 kills with just 10 errors. Over the final two sets, Rhody converted just 43 percent of its sideout opportunities (21-of-49). This allowed Fordham (7-11, 1-4 A10) to score points in bunches while URI played from behind throughout the match.
Set One - Fordham 25, Rhode Island 23
Trailing 17-10 after an ace by Fordham's Lola Fernandez, Rhode Island showed signs of life and managed to trim the deficit to one point.
Cara Richter (3 kills),
Emily Sawyer (2 kills) and
Hannah Jonick (2 kills) all found rhythm as URI rallied to get within 24-23. However, Fordham's Sophia Kuyn ended the set for the guests.
Set Two - Fordham 25, Rhode Island 14
An
Emily Sawyer kill pulled Rhode Island with a point at 8-7. From there, it was all Fordham. The guests had had five blocks and forced URI into 12 attack errors. Fordham also converted 12 of 15 sideout chances, preventing Rhode Island from ever gaining traction.
Set Three - Fordham 25, Rhode Island 17
Offense dominated for both sides in the final set. Fordham hit .524 (14 kills, 3 errors in 21 attacks) and Rhody hit .423 (13 kills, 2 errors, 26 attacks). The home side could not keep up with Fordham's efficiency, despite putting together one of its strongest offensive sets of the season.
