TRUMBULL, Conn. - Rhode Island won the first five singles slots to record its second straight victory, beating Sacred Heart Sunday night.
Sophie Hermann,
Anastasia Pettersson and
Kajsa Helgesen all won their matches in straight sets.
Nikki Fernando and
Grace Darcy outlasted their opponents in three-set thrillers.
Herrman won her match against Kailin Gochna at No. 3 singles while allowing just game. Herrman swept the opening set 6-0 and clinched the second set, 6-1. Helgesen was nearly as dominant at No. 5 singles, beating Brooke Tufts, 6-0, 6-2.
Fernando, Pettersson and Helgesen all went 2-0 in singles play this weekend. Fernando and Helgesen also went 2-0 in doubles play.
"Two wins this weekend is good, but there are still a lot of things we need to clean up and improve on," Rhode Island head coach
Jonas Brobeck said. "Doubles will be a main focus this week leading into our first home matches versus Hofstra and Providence."
Rhode Island hosts Hofstra (Feb. 7) and Providence (Feb. 8) next weekend at the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
