How it Happened
New Hampshire's Makayla Keys scored a man-up goal in overtime to lift the Wildcats to a 9-8 victory over Rhode Island Tuesday afternoon.
Rhode Island (0-2) battled back to force overtime. New Hampshire (1-1) had possession and was playing a man up with 15 seconds to go. URI's
Izze Gill forced a turnover that was picked up by
Ella Pauline. The ball found its way to
Caralie Basuel, who scored with three seconds on the clock to tie the match, 8-8.
Unfortunately Rhody's valiant comeback efforts came up short. The Rams rallied from a three-goal deficit late in the third, but it could not complete the comeback.
Trailing 5-2, Rhode Island scored three times in a span of two minutes late in the third quarter.
Caralie Basuel's second goal of the day came off an assist from
Caitlin Dellecave to make the score 5-3 with 4:29 to go in the quarter.
Calli Dunn followed with a goal that was assist by
Kate Cumins to pull URI within one goal at the 3:15 mark. Dellecave pulled Rhody even 49 seconds later with a helper from
Celie Shield, tying the match.
New Hampshire scored 57 seconds into the fourth quarter to reclaim the lead. Kate O'Rourke's second goal of the match put the Wildcats ahead 6-5.
Kyndall Jackson's first career goal tied the match for Rhode Island four minutes later.
Libby Boland (4 goals, 1 assist) scored an unassisted goal 40 seconds later that once again put New Hampshire in the lead, 7-6, with 8:29 to go. Boland struck again with her second goal in just 61 seconds for make it a two-goal lead. Rhody managed to tie the game to force overtime, but New Hampshire ended the match on Keys' second goal of the day.
