How It Happened
Rhode Island could not get its offense going as it fell 4-1 to Missouri State on the final day of the Lion Invitational in Commerce, Texas Sunday.
The Rams (1-2) managed just four singles off Missouri State pitchers Brylee Brewster (2-1) and Emily Koranda. Brewster had five strikeouts and allowed URI's lone run in 5.0 innings of work, while Koranda pitched the final two innings for her first save of the season.
Missouri State (4-3) nicked Rhody starter
Brooke Gerry (0-1) for a run in the bottom of the first. Leadoff hitter Alexis Perales doubled to right field. A walk to Brynn Romine and a single by Lauren Rowland loaded the bases with no outs. Gerry struck out cleanup hitter Halle Studer before Riley Baber drove in Perales with a run-scoring groundout. Gerry got out of the inning without further damage when she retired Emily Gerardy on a grounder.
Rhode Island managed to tie the game in the top of the fourth.
Julianne Torres was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single by
Becca Zawistowski. Torres moved to third on a fly out by
Riley Frickleton, and she scored on a sacrifice fly by
Brooke Fairbanks.
Missouri State reclaimed the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. With Perales on second thanks to a leadoff double, Rowland laced a double down the left field line to bring Perales in. Studer followed with a home run to right, putting the Bears up, 4-1.
The Rams got two runners on in the sixth and one more in the seventh, but they were unable to close the gap.
