How It Happened
Rhode Island suffered a weathered-shortened loss at Georgia Southern, falling 2-1 in five innings Saturday afternoon.
The Ram (3-3) were threatening to either tie the game or take the lead when play was halted.
Katie Knarr led off the frame by reaching on an error. Pinch runner
Meg McNally beat the throw to second when
Natalie Maleitzke grounded a ball to third base, giving URI two on with nobody out.
Sydney Orndorff followed with a groundout that moved both runners into scoring position, but the game was called before
Rayah Snyder had a chance to bring them in.
Georgia Southern (6-7) capitalized on three Rhode Island errors in the bottom of the second inning. Emma Davis reached on an error by second baseman
Casey Miller. Braelyn Queen followed with an infield single, and both runners moved into scoring position on a throwing error by shortstop
Julianne Torres. Carley Ramsden followed with a grounder to Miller, who could not field the ball cleanly and then threw it away, allowing Davis and Queen to score.
Rhody starter
Brooke Gerry (0-2) got out of the inning without further damage. Outside of the second innings, she did not allow a hit, retiring the side in order in the first, third and fourth innings.
Unfortunately Rhody managed just one run, which came in the top of the first.
Hannah Hernandez led off with a single, moved to second when
Riley Frickleton walked and then was sacrificed to third.
Brooke Fairbanks brought Hernandez in with a single.
