NEWPORT, R.I. - A clean 7-0 sweep of in-state rival Providence gave Rhode Island its fourth straight victory Sunday evening.
The Rams (4-1) won all three doubles matches, with each pair giving up three games or less. The singles players were equally dominant, all winning in straight sets, with nobody dropping more than three games in a set.
Nikki Fernando,
Sophie Herrman,
Anastasia Pettersson and
Kajsa Helgesen all won in both singles and doubles.
Ava Grnja teamed with Herrman for a win at No. 3 doubles. Adding victories in the singles lineup were
Miruna Scarlat and
Stephanie Hylton.
"Overall, it was a good weekend for the team," Rhode Island head coach
Jonas Brobeck said. "I was excited to see us play better doubles with each match. We need to rest up and prepare for a strong NJIT team next Sunday."
By teaming with Helgesen for the win at No. 1 doubles, Fernando moved into a tie with Grace Hedstrom (2005-09) for third place in program history with 59 career doubles wins. Only Tristany Leikem (64 from 2008-12) and Amanda Barletta (61 from 2007-10) are ahead of Fernando on the all-time list.
Rhode Island looks to make it five straight victories when it hosts NJIT on Sunday, Feb. 15. The match begins at 5:45 p.m. at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I.
