NEWPORT, R.I. - Rhode Island made quick work of Le Moyne Saturday night, blanking the Dolphins 4-0 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
The Rams (5-3) grabbed an early lead by taking the doubles point and winning all three spots.
Nikki Fernando and
Kajsa Helgesen won 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. It was the 60th career doubles win for Fernando, moving her into third place in program history. She trails only Tristany Leikem (64 from 2005-09) and Amanda Barletta (61 from 2007-09).
Grace Darcy and
Anastasia Pettersson won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles, and
Sophie Herrman and
Ava Grnja completed the sweep with a 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles. Herrman became the seventh player in program history to reach 50 career doubles wins.
As singles play started, Rhody had a 2-0 lead. Fernando's opponent retired due to injury, giving Fernando the point. Helgesen was nearly flawless at No. 4 singles, earning the 6-1, 6-0 victory. Darcy clinched the team win with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles.
Herrman had her match at No. 2 singles, leading 6-1, 4-1 when play was halted.
Rhode Island is back at the Hall of Fame Sunday evening, hosting Siena. The match begins at 5:45 p.m. Â
