SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - Rhode Island ended its Spring Break trip on a high note, defeating Divisio II Dominican University of California 4-0 Friday afternoon.
The Rams got straight-set singles victories from
Kajsa Helgesen,
Anastasia Pettersson and
Ava Grnja at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. All three were also part of doubles wins, as Rhody (8-6) swept doubles play, with each of its teams winning 6-1.
"We had a good ending to a beautiful Spring Break trip," Rhode Island head coach
Jonas Brobeck said. "We got a lot of outdoor practice time and quality matches in, which is always the goal. This was all made possible with the help of host families, supportive donors, and Saint Mary's. We will rest up for a couple of days and get ready for our Atlantic 10 matches."
At No. 1 doubles. Helgesen and
Nikki Fernando paired up for their team-leading 14th win of the year. For Fernando, it was career win 64 in doubles play, tying her with Tristany Leikem (2008-12) for the most in program history.
Grnja - who teamed with
Sophie Herrman for the win at No. 3 doubles - improved to 6-0 with her win at No. 6 singles.
Rhode Island opens Atlantic 10 play at Saint Joseph's on Saturday, March 28. Play begins at 10 a.m.
