How it Happened
After trailing 5-1 at the end of the first quarter, Rhode Island's comeback bid fell short as St. Bonaventure pulled away over the final seven minutes to secure a 12-8 victory.
Caralie Basuel and Kyndall Jackson each scored within the opening three minutes of the fourth quarter to cut the Bonnies' lead to 8-7. St. Bonaventure responded with four unanswered goals to push its advantage to five with two minutes remaining. Caitlin Dellecave scored in the final minutes, but St. Bonaventure had already sealed the victory.
Despite six combined goals in the first quarter, both teams were held quiet offensively in the second. The Rams broke through on a goal from Ashlyn Carpenter with three minutes remaining, and Rhode Island struck again with 21 seconds left in the half when Caralie Basuel scored to cut the Bonnies' lead to 5-3. St. Bonaventure responded in the closing seconds of the second quarter, as Brooke Piper scored with two seconds remaining to give the Bonnies a 6-3 lead at halftime.
Two third-quarter goals from Rhode Island provided hope for a comeback. Celie Shield and Kate Cumins each scored to cut into the Bonnies' lead, but St. Bonaventure matched each goal from Rhode Island to keep the Rams at bay. That set the stage for a fourth-quarter surge by the Bonnies that secured the victory.
