How it HappenedÂ
Rhode Island could not overcome an early deficit, falling to George Washington in the Atlantic 10 opener.
George Washington built an early cushion with four first-quarter goals to take a 4-1 lead after the opening 15 minutes. GW's Kiki Rotay opened the scoring at 14:07, followed by Mia Milkowski at 9:51. Parker Febo extended the advantage with 7:02 remaining off an assist from Milkowski, and Grace Curry made it 4-0 at the 4:32 mark. Rhode Island broke through late in the quarter when Caitlin Dellecave finished a feed from Caralie Basuel with 1:07 remaining to cut the deficit to three heading into the second (4-1).
The Revolutionaries added three goals early in the second quarter to extend its lead before Rhode Island answered with a late surge to close within two by halftime. Mckenna Jacobs opened the scoring at 13:03 with a free-position goal during a man-up opportunity, and Rotay followed just over a minute later off a pass from Jacobs to make it 6-1. After Basuel cut into the deficit at 7:54 off an assist from Dellecave, Rotay struck again at 6:54 to push GW ahead 7-2. The Rams responded with three of the final four goals of the quarter. Kate Cumins converted a free-position attempt at 5:46, MJ Timpanaro added a man-up goal with 1:34 remaining off another feed from Dellecave, and Dellecave finished the half with a goal of her own in the closing seconds to trim the deficit to 7-5 at the break.
George Washington extended its lead in the third quarter, using a 3-0 period to take a 10-5 advantage into the fourth.
The Revolutionaries offense proved too much down the stretch, adding three early fourth-quarter goals to pull away for a 13-7 win. Emerson Goettelmann and Calli Dunn added goals for Rhode Island later in the quarter, but it wasn't enough as GW picked up its first Atlantic 10 victory of the season.
