KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island suffered a heartbreaking loss in its home finale, falling 4-3 to George Washington Saturday afternoon.
The Rams (11-9, 1-3 Atlantic 10) appeared well on its way to victory when they took the first three points of the match. Wins from the teams of
Nikki Fernando and
Kajsa Helgesen at No. 1 doubles and
Sophie Herrman and
Ava Grnja gave Rhody the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
The doubles win for Fernando and Helgesen was their 18th of the season. Fernando became the first Rhode Island player to win at least 18 doubles matches in three different seasons.
Grace Darcy won in straight sets at No. 1 singles to put the Rams ahead 2-0.
Nikki Fernando followed suit with a three-set win at No. 2 singles. With her 64th career singles win, Fernando moved into a tie with Christen Cadigan (2007-11) for third place in program history.
From there, George Washington (9-8, 3-2 A-10) won the rest of the singles matches. Rhode Island had match point in multiple singles matches in slots 3-6, but Rhody could not close out the victory.
The Rams close out the regular season at Fordham on Saturday, April 18. The match begins at 12 p.m. and is the final match before URI heads to the Atlantic 10 Championship in Lake Nona, Fla. from April 22-25.
