How It Happened
Rhode Island (17-25, 6-14 Atlantic 10) rebounded from a mercy-rule loss in the first game to beat George Washington in the second game and earn a doubleheader split Saturday. GW (20-19, 9-11 A-10) won the first game 10-2 in five innings. Rhody battled back to take the nightcap, 5-2.

Game 1 - George Washington 10, Rhode Island 2 (5 inn.)
The Revolutionaries got four runs in the third on a grand slam by Sydney Hogue. Emi Todoroki doubled, Ashley Corpuz singled through the left side and Paige Hayward reached on a bunt to load the bases with no outs. Hogue then drilled a long shot well over the left field fence.
Rhody got a run back in the top of the fourth. With runners on first and second with two down,
Casey Miller looped a single into shallow right, allowing
Hannah Hernandez to score from second.
Rayah Snyder followed with a hard line drive that first baseman Emi Todoroki snagged to end the inning and prevent further damage.
George Washington broke the game open with six runs in the bottom of the fourth. Paige Hayward had a two-run double and CeCe Smith had a two-run single to key the rally and set up the mercy rule. Those were the only two hits in the frame for the hosts.
Becca Zawistowski delivered an RBI single to drive in
Sydney Orndorff for URI in the top of the fifth. However, that was all the scoring for Rhody, as it was unable to extend the game.

Game 2 - Rhode Island 5, George Washington 2
Ashley Hibbard (5-4) pitched six shutout innings to help Rhode Island earn a split of the doubleheader.
Rhody took its first lead of the day in the top of the second.
Sydney Orndorff reached on an infield single, stole second base and moved to third on a passed ball.
Giuliana Ialongo brought her home with a sacrifice fly, putting URI up, 1-0.
The Rams took advantage of walks and errors to bat around during a four-run sixth inning. After back-to-back walks for
Riley Frickleton and
Kylie Bulinski to start the frame,
Becca Zawistowski singled to load the bases. Orndorff reached on a fielder's choice when an infield error allowed Frickleton to score. With one out,
Rayah Snyder drew a bases-loaded walk to force pinch runner
Brooke Gerry in for a 3-0 lead. The final two runs came in when
Casey Miller reached on an error that allowed Snyder and
Giuliana Ialongo to come in and extend the lead to five runs.
After
Olivia Kuhnel retired the first batter of the bottom of the seventh, GW got back-to-back doubles from Ashley Corpuz and Paige Hayward in the bottom of the seventh to get its first run of the game. Sydney Hogue delivered a third straight double to drive in Hayward and make the score 5-2. A walk to CeCe Smith brought the tying run to the plate with one out.
Cadence Gilliland reached on a fielder's choice, but third baseman
Riley Frickleton was able to retire the lead runner for the second out of the inning. First baseman
Becca Zawistowski made a diving catch on a line drive off the bat of pinch hitter Emma Fales to end the game.
