How it Happened
Rhode Island's late-inning comeback was spoiled in the top of the 11th inning as the Rams fell to Saint Joseph's 10-9 on Thursday evening in Kingston.
With the score tied at 9-9 in the top of the 11th frame, Hawks' catcher and Atlantic 10 home run leader Blake Primrose launched a solo homer to deep left field to give St. Joe's the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run.
Primrose's extra-inning blast erased Rhode Island's comeback bid that stretched across the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. Trailing 7-2 through five, the Rams plated three runs in the sixth. Ryan Henschel singled and scored Ryan King. Then Ryan Thompson singled and score both Brian Connolly and Aidan Botti.
After St. Joe's added two runs in the seventh, the Rams responded with a Connolly infield single that brought Reece Moroney into score. With the Rams trailing 9-6 entering the eighth, Scott Penney tripled into right field and brought Henschel to the plate. Then Thompson struck a two-run homer to tie the game at 9 in heading into the ninth. The score stayed that way until the 11th when Primrose lifted the Hawks to victory.
