How it Happened
Rhode Island's offense exploded with 20 hits and beat No. 4 George Mason 19-8 in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship on Wednesday afternoon in Tysons, Va.

The Rams offense was clicking throughout the entire game starting in the third inning. With the game tied at 1-1 in the top of the third, Rhode Island first five batters reached base and later scored. Scott Penney began the inning with a solo home run. Then Ryan Thompson and Reece Moroney both singled, setting up an RBI single from Jack Hopko. After Hopko's single, Ryan King smashed a three-run home run to deep left field. By the end of the top of the frame, Rhode Island had a 6-1 lead. Moroney tacked on another solo homer in the top of the fourth to make it 7-1. Moroney's fourth-inning blast was one of five Rhode Island home runs on the day.

In the sixth and seventh innings, Rhode Island began to distance itself further. With the bases loaded in the sixth, Penney hit a bases-clearing triple down the right field line. Penney then scored on a Thompson single. By the end of the sixth the Rams led 13-3 and added four more in the seventh to put the game out of reach at 17-3.

George Mason managed to create offense against Rhode Island's late-inning arms. The Patriots scored four runs in the seventh, and one run in the eighth to cut into Rhode Island's 14-run lead and make the game 17-8 heading into the top of the ninth. Penney continued to rake for the Rams with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth and make the score 19-8, the eventual final.
