How it Happened
The Rams battled but could not keep pace with nationally ranked Duke on Sunday night, falling to the No. 2 Blue Devils, 6-1, in Durham. Freshman Emily Morgan scored her first career goal, but it was not enough as the ACC powerhouse earned the victory.
Duke opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Sam Courtwright found the back of the net off an assist from Yuna Marui. The Blue Devils doubled their lead when Mia Minestrella converted a penalty kick following a handball in the box. Katie Shea Collins added to the advantage off an assist from Natalie Chudowsky, sending Duke into halftime with a 3-0 lead. The Blue Devils outshot the Rams, 15-1, in the opening 45 minutes.
Duke extended its lead in the opening minute of the second half with back-to-back goals to make it 5-0 before Minestrella completed her hat trick to push the advantage to 6-0.
Rhode Island got on the board in the 69th minute when Megan Steinbach sent a cross to Morgan, who finished the chance for her first collegiate goal and cut the deficit to 6-1.
The Rams could not find the back of the net again against the strong Duke defense. Goalkeeper Dani Eden made five saves in the second half as the Blue Devils held on for the 6-1 victory.
