Tyler Barss joined the Rhode Island staff before the start of the 2023 season as its director of baseball operations.
BarssĀ is arguably the greatest closer in Rhode Island history, setting the program record for career saves with 29, which was 12 more than the next closest person on the list when his career ended. From 2014-18, Barss appeared in 81 games, the second-most in program history when he graduated. He also held the program's single season record for saves (13) and had the third-highest single-season total (11). As a senior in 2018, he averaged 12.92 strikeouts per nine innings.
Barss earned NEIBA All-New England Second Team honors in 2017 and was an All-Atlantic 10 Second Team selection in 2017. He was a member of the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship team, and he recorded the final out of URI's upset win over South Carolina in the opening game of the NCAA Regional.
Barss played professionally with the Washington Wild Things in 2019 and the Traverse City Beach Bums in 2018. Following his playing career, he was a teaching assistant in the South Kingstown school system and a paraprofessional at GoffstownĀ Middle School in Goffstown, N.H. He also has worked as a laborer for Kamco Supply Corporation and as a truck driver for HitchinerĀ Manufacturing.Ā
Barss earned his bachelor's degree in Sociology with a focus in criminology in 2018.Ā
