Bobby Hurley begins his first season as a member of the men'sbasketball coaching staff at Rhode Island, serving as the team'sassociate head coach.
Prior to arriving in Kingston, Hurley spent the previous twoseasons as an assistant coach at Wagner College as a member of hisbrother Dan's coaching staff.
One of the best point guards in the history of college basketball,Hurley helped the Blue Devils to a four-year record of 119-26(.821) with three Final Four berths, was a two-time All-Americaselection (1992-93), three-time All-ACC pick (1991-92-93), two-timeNCAA All-Final Four honoree (1991-92) and the Most OutstandingPlayer of the 1992 NCAA Final Four. Hurley is the all-timeNCAA Division I leader in assists, with 1,076, and holds Duke'ssingle-game assist record, with 16 against Florida State on Feb.24, 1993.
Playing in 140 career games, he amassed career totals of 1,731points, 1,076 assists, 306 rebounds and 202 steals. His #11jersey was retired and raised to the rafters of Cameron IndoorStadium in 1993. In 2002, Hurley was named to the ACC's 50thAnniversary Team as one of the 50 greatest players in ACChistory. Hurley was also voted into the Duke Athletics Hallof Fame and entered alongside his former coach and mentor MikeKrzyzewski in 2011.
This year, in conjunction the 35th anniversary of the McDonald'sHigh School All-American Game, Hurley was named one of the game's35 greatest all-stars, along with former Duke standouts Grant Hilland Christian Laettner.
Hurley was a lottery pick of the Sacramento Kings in the 1993 NBADraft. Hurley played six seasons in the NBA for theSacramento Kings and Vancouver Grizzlies. After retiring, he wenton to become a thoroughbred racehorse owner and breeder beforebeing hired as a scout by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2003.
A native of Jersey City, N.J., Hurley grew up in one of America'smost well-known basketball families. His father, Bob, Sr., isthe highly successful head coach at St. Anthony H.S. Duringthe summer of 2010, he became just the second high school coachinducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
As a prep, Hurley starred at St. Anthony High School in JerseyCity and led the Friars to four consecutive Parochial B statetitles. In his senior year, he guided the St. Anthony to a perfect32-0 record, the school's first Tournament of Champions crown, andthe No. 1 ranking in the nation. In his high school career, St.Anthony's overall record with Hurley, Jr. as point guard was115-5.
Hurley and his wife Leslie are the proud parents of threechildren: Cameron, Sydney and Bob.
