T.J. Buchanan enters his second season as an assistant coach and fourth season overall on the Rhode Island coaching staff. He was promoted to assistant coach in July of 2019. Buchanan had returned to the Rhode Island men's basketball program as the Director of Player Development in September of 2017 and was promoted to Director of Basketball Operations in May of 2018.

Buchanan - a former two-year captain as a player with the Rams - has been on the Rhode Island staff since September of 2017. Last season, in addition to his role as the team’s director of operations, Buchanan also was an interim assistant coach during the second half of the year while John Carroll was away from the team dealing with health issues.

Buchanan played for Rhode Island from 2011-15. He was part of the staff when the Rams made the field for the 2018 NCAA Championship, serving as the director of player development. When Cox was named as the head coach that offseason, Buchanan was promoted to director of operations.

As a player, Buchanan helped lead Rhode Island to the NIT during his senior season. He was honored by the Rhode Island House of Representatives with the Scholar Athlete Award during his senior year.

After graduating from Rhode Island, Buchanan spent three seasons as an assistant coach for Kalamazoo Central, helping the team win back-to-back Class A Southwest Michigan District championships in 2015-16 and 2016-17. The team also was the 2016-17 Class A Southwest Regional champion. All five seniors from the 2016-17 squad moved on to play collegiate basketball.

Buchanan graduated from Rhode Island with a bachelor's degree in Communication Studies in May of 2015. He also earned a minor in Writing.
