Paul Woelmer joined the Rhode Island Athletic Department as the Director of Basketball Performance in May of 2023. He will work directly with the men’s and women’s basketball programs.
Woelmer came to Kingston after spending three years at the College of Holy Cross as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. With the Crusaders, he worked with the men’s basketball program, in addition to providing coverage for several other teams.
Before his time at Holy Cross, Woelmer was at Indiana University, where he served as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach for two years. He worked with the Hoosiers’ men’s basketball program, facilitating both in-season and off-season training programs. Woelmer also spent time as a fellow with the Indiana University Center for Elite Athlete Development.
Woelmer also spent time as an assistant strength and conditioning coach with the Tampa Bay Rays organization. He designed and implemented strength and conditioning programs for the spring training and extended spring training rosters, as well as the Rays’ Gulf Coast League affiliate. Woelmer also spent time as an intern at the University of Alabama and the U.S. Olympic Training Site in Marquette, Mich.
A competitive weightlifter, Woelmer was an under-25 national champion in 2016. Previously in 2014, he was a junior national champion, a university world bronze medalist and a university national silver medalist.
A certified strength and conditioning specialist, Woelmer was a 2019 recipient of a National Strength and Conditioning Association Foundation Assistantship. He received his bachelor’s degree in sport science from Northern Michigan University in 2017, and his master’s degree in leadership in applied sport science from Indiana University in December of 2020.
