KINGSTON, R.I. -
Rhode Island senior Cheri Melson recorded 19 kills and 17 digs but it was not enough as Brown defeated the Rams, 3-2, in URI's regular-season home finale tonight in Keaney Gymnasium.
The win was the Bears' first over URI since 1992.
Freshman Michelle Fulton had 16 kills and six blocks for URI, while freshman Amy Kauppila added 15 kills and nine digs. Britta Feldmann, another first-year player, registered 57 assists and 10 digs.
URI battled from behind all night. After dropping the first game, 15-8, the Rams convincingly took game two, 15-6. The Bears won game three, 15-8, and held a 14-12 lead in game four but the Rams rallied for a thrilling 17-15 victory to send the match to a fifth game. The decisive fifth game was equally as exciting but Brown emerged with the slim two-point win.
Tonight's match was Senior Night. URI recognized seniors Melson and Lindsay Watty in a pre-game ceremony.
