Sept. 28, 2001

KINGSTON, R.I. - Sophomore outside hitter Amy Kauppila came up with 14 kills and led all players with 13 digs Friday night as Rhode Island upset visiting Dayton 3-1 in Atlantic 10 Conference volleyball action.

Junior setter Juliana Valencia had a career-high seven aces, along with 11 digs and 46 assists, helping the Rams (5-7, 2-1) win for the fifth time in their last six matches and avenge a pair of 3-0 wipeouts last year against Dayton (7-4, 2-1).

The Rams won the first two games 30-26 and 30-27, trailing only briefly early in each game. They blew a 14-4 lead in the third game and wound up falling 33-31, but they managed to regroup and breeze to a 30-19 victory in the fourth.

Dayton entered the match tied for the Atlantic 10 lead after shocking preseason favorite Xavier 3-0 on Sunday. The Flyers had a match-high 21 kills and a team-high 10 digs from all-leaguer Katie Ferriell, but they betrayed themselves with 18 service errors while playing from behind all night.
