Puikkonen Sisters Lead No. 11 BYU over Rams 3-0

Sept. 3, 2001

PROVO, UTAH - First-team all-American Nina Puikkonen led the way with a game-high 15 kills and her all-league sister Karina contributed a game-high 35 assists Monday as No. 11 Brigham Young handed visiting Rhode Island a 3-0 loss, its third to a nationally ranked team in the season's first four days.

Brigham Young (3-1) played only two reserves in sweeping the non-conference match 30-21, 30-19 and 30-25 before a crowd of 1,390. It was the third meeting ever between the two teams, the first since 1988.

Rhode Island fell to 0-4, including losses to No. 21 Utah, No. 25 Georgia Tech and unranked Texas Tech at the Utah Classic this past weekend. Mary Kate Reardon led the Rams with eight kills, three off her career high, and fellow sophomore Amy Kauppila had a team-high nine digs.

Rhode Island heads into the Baylor Classic in Waco, Texas, where it takes on Cal-San Luis Obispo and Baylor on Friday and tangles with Texas-Pan American and North Texas on Saturday.
