Woodward's Buzzer-Beater Sinks Saint Joseph's, 58-57

KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) - Brian Woodward's steal and layup with one second left capped a 7-0 game-ending run that gave Rhode Island a 58-57 win over Saint Joseph's on Sunday.

Woodward had missed a potential game-winning shot with two seconds to play, but stripped the ball from the Hawks' Dwayne Jones, who had grabbed the rebound. Woodward, who led Rhode Island with 12 points, put the ball back from point-blank range just before the buzzer.

Saint Joseph's (12-2, 4-1 Atlantic 10) led 57-51 with 4:08 to play, but didn't score again. Jameer Nelson had two turnovers in the final minute and missed the front end of a one-and-one with 10.9 seconds to play.

The Hawks took the 57-51 lead with an 18-6 run led by Delonte West, who scored 11 of his game-high 26 points during the run, including a long jumper that proved to be the team's final points of the game.

Rhode Island (11-4, 3-1) pulled within 57-56 with 1:37 to play on Howard Smith's steal and ensuing layoff.

Saint Joseph's scored the final eight points of the first half to take a 31-26 lead at halftime. Rhode Island opened the second half with a 19-8 run for a 45-39 lead.

Nelson finished with 14 points, five assists and six turnovers.

Dustin Hellenga added 11 points and seven rebounds for Rhode Island.
