Men's Basketball Edged By Temple, 71-68

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - David Hawkins scored 18 points, including four free throws in the final 17 seconds, and Temple beat Rhode Island 71-68 on Wednesday night.

Hawkins' two foul shots with 17 seconds remaining gave Temple (5-11, 3-3 Atlantic 10) a four-point lead. Rhode Island's Dustin Hellenga missed a 3-point attempt with 9.5 seconds to play, and Hawkins made two more free throws to make it 71-65.

Rhode Island (11-5, 3-2) led 41-31 at halftime after shooting 52 percent from the field, including 8-for-13 from 3-point range.

But Temple held the Rams to four points over the first 12:07 of the second half, opening a 53-47 lead.

Temple extended its lead to 61-50 with 3:24 to play on a jumper by Hawkins.

Maurice Collins had 17 points for Temple.

Lazare Adingono had 15 points for Rhode Island, all in the first half.
