Men's Basketball Drops Northeastern, 89-77

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - Dustin Hellenga scored 20 points to lead Rhode Island to an 89-77 win over Northeastern on Friday night in the first round of the Las Vegas Tournament.

Hellenga was one of five players in double figures for Rhode Island (1-0). Dawan Robinson and Brian Woodward each chipped in with 16, while Terrence Mack and Jamaal Wise had 10 each.

Northeastern (0-1) scored just four points in the first eight minutes of the second half as Rhode Island led by as much as 26 points.

Mack's three-point play with 11:37 to play in the second put Rhode Island ahead 69-43.

Rhode Island led 47-36 at the half.

Barnes led Northeastern with 20 points. Jose Juan Barea and Javorie Wilson each had 17 and Robinson added 14. Rhode Island held a 51-30 edge in rebounding and forced 23 Northeastern turnovers.
