UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Jeff Myers knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the key with 16 seconds remaining in overtime to propel the University of Richmond to a 70-69 Atlantic 10 win against Rhode Island in a thrilling contest before 7,974 fans at the Robins Center.
Myers, who tied with teammate Jamaal Scott for a team-high 18 points, scored five of the Spiders' seven points in overtime. His fade-away jumper with 1:32 remaining broke the seal for Richmond (13-11, 7-6 A-10), after Rhode Island (15-9, 7-6 A-10) had notched the first four points of OT. After a tip-in from freshman Kevin Steenberge knotted the game 67-67 with 48 seconds to play, URI's Brian Woodward capped off a 21-point night with a driving baseline runner to put the Rams ahead by two.
After a timeout at 26 seconds, Richmond ran a high screen for Myers who buried the game-winning jumper. Rhode Island had one last chance to win the game, but Lazare Adingono's attempt clanked short and senior Johnathan Collins secured the rebound and a much needed win.
The visitors carried the momentum after recovering from a five-point deficit (62-57) with 1:24 to play in regulation. After Rhody buckets cut the lead to three, the Spiders' Scott had a chance to increase the lead to a two-possession game. After missing the first free throw, he netted the second to give Richmond a 63-60 lead with 20 seconds left.
Adingono took matters into his own hands, driving the ball to the top of the circle, where he was fouled by junior Tony Dobbins. Calmly, with eight seconds showing on the clock, the Ram swished all three free throws to force the overtime session.
Myers game-winning triple was his third of the game, his first in overtime after missing his first three attempts. Scott was 5-of-11 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
