Rhode Island Falls Short Against Seton Hall, 59-49

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - Kelly Whitney scored eight of his team-high 14 points during a 14-0 Seton Hall run to start the second half as the Pirates pulled away for a 59-49 win over Rhode Island on Sunday.

Seton Hall (1-1) led 20-15 at halftime, but Whitney hit a jumper, two layups and a pair of free throws as the Pirates went ahead 34-15 with 16:15 to play.

Rhode Island's J.R. Moore finally ended the run with a tipin at 15:42.

Seton Hall's biggest lead was 43-22 with 11:10 to play after John Allen made a foul shot.

Scott Hazelton scored eight points in a 10-2 run as Rhode Island (1-3) pulled within 47-40 on a pair of free throws by Moore with 3:41 to play.

But Seton Hall went 10-for-12 from the foul line down the stretch to hold off the Rams.

Whitney also had a team-high 11 rebounds. Donald Copeland added 13 points and J.R Morris had 11.

Hazelton scored all of his game-high 15 points in the second half.

Seton Hall opened the game with a 9-0 run by hitting 4-of-5 from the field while Rhode Island missed its first five attempts. Both teams struggled in the first half, with Seton Hall hitting 36 percent from the field, and Rhode Island 23 percent. The Rams did not score until Will Daniels' jumper, when there was 14:28 to play.
