PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Pat Carroll scored 20 points and Dwayne Jones added 11
to lead Saint Joseph's to a 60-52 win over Rhode Island on Saturday.
The Hawks (5-6, 2-0 Atlantic 10) survived an 8\-minute stretch without a
field goal in the first half and getting outrebounded 42-27 to win two straight
games for only the second time this year.
Carroll made four of Saint Joe's seven 3-pointers and the Hawks were
17-for-27 from the free-throw line.
Rhode Island (3-10, 1-1) shot 38 percent from the floor and was in foul
trouble for most of the game, allowing the Hawks to shoot in the bonus for
about the final 12 minutes of the second half. Rhode Island attempted only 12
free throws and three players finished the game with four fouls.
The Hawks snapped a tie game midway through the second half, with John
Bryant scoring five straight points and Carroll hitting consecutive 3s against
Rhode Island's zone to push the lead to double digits.
Terrence Mack led the Rams with 18 points and Will Daniels had 11. Scott
Hazelton, who came in with a team-high average of 17.4 points, had four fouls
early in the second half took only one shot.
The first half was about the sloppiest, ugliest half the Hawks have played
all season, if not in a couple of years. Dave Mallon and Dwayne Lee opened the
game with 3-pointers and the Hawks didn't score from the floor again until
Carroll's 3 with 9:20 left.
Saint Joe's had eight turnovers in the first 10 minutes of the game and both
teams combined for 20 in the first half. The Hawks were saved by hitting five
3s to one for the Rams. The Hawks didn't score their first 2-point basket until
Jones made a reverse layup with 2:46 to go.
Saint Joe's, though, had only three turnovers in the second half.
