CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Rhode Island junior outside hitter Rachel Bello and junior outside hitter Inga Schlecht were named all-tournament selections at the New England Challenge, Saturday, hosted by Harvard after leading the Rams to a 2-1 record on the weekend.
URI (5-4) shut out Holy Cross, 3-0 (30-25, 30-19, 30-20) on Friday, and Boston College, 3-0 (30-25, 30-28, 30-23), before falling to the host Crimson in a tight, 3-2 (25-30, 30-28, 30-25, 20-30, 16-14) final match on Saturday.
St. John had 30 assists, 12 kills and eight digs versus Holy Cross, and 36 assists, 13 kills and 12 digs against Harvard.
Schlecht's weekend was highlighted by a 14-assists, 11-kill, and 10-dig performance versus Holy Cross, and a 26-assist, 19-kill and eight-dig showing versus Harvard. For the weekend, she compiled a .305 hitting percentage.
Freshman libero Leslie Wiekamp (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) averaged 4.55 digs per game during the tournament, including a match-high 24 versus Harvard.
URI kicks off the home portion of the 2005 schedule, hosting North Carolina, Arizona and Connecticut this Friday and Saturday, September 16-17 in the Rhode Island Volleyball Classic. URI take on UNC in the tournament's first match at 10:00 a.m. on Friday.
