KINGSTON, R.I. Senior outside hitter Rachel Bello put down 14 kills and tallied 13 digs, but the Rams were defeated by the Saint Louis Billikens, 3-0 (30-24, 30-28, 31-29)
Freshman middle blocker Caitlyn Welsh was second on the team with nine kills and senior outside hitter Inga Schlecht was third with eight kills to go along with two service aces and eight digs.
Sophomore libero Leslie Wiekamp, ranked second in the A-10 in digs, and Saint Louis libero Whitney Behrens, ranked third, tied with 14 digs apiece.
Down early in the first game with the score 19-9, Rhode Island came roaring back to only be down five points with the score being 26-21. Saint Louis took advantage of late errors by the Rams and ended up winning the first game 30-24. The second game was a game full of runs by both teams. Rhode Island held a lead of 15-10 until the Billikens made a run to tie up the game at 19. Then the Rams took another lead of 24-20 but it was Saint Louis again making a run behind seven straight service points by Jessica Poorbaugh to take a 27-24 lead. The Rams were able to tie the game up at 28-28 but it was Saint Louis who outlasted the Rams in the back and forth game to win 30-28.
In game three, Saint Louis took a commanding lead of 28-21 and seemed to have the match won until Rhode Island continued to come back to tie the game at 29. However, for the third straight game, Saint Louis ended Rhode Island's comeback efforts and won the match, 3-0.
The Rams will host Duquesne tomorrow, Saturday, October 7, at Keaney Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.
