Baseball Downs Quinnipiac, 14-5

The University of Rhode Island (17-6) baseball team combined for 21 hits including three homeruns in their 14-5 victory over Quinnipiac (11-14-1) on Tuesday afternoon at Bobcat Field in Hamden, Conn. 

The Rams struck first scoring four in the top of the first. Two runs on a ground-rule double by Junior right-fielder Scott Brown, another on a sacrifice fly by sophomore catcher Zack Zaneski, and the final run of the inning on a single by sophomore shortstop Mike O'Malley. Rhode Island added a single run in the second to make it 5-0 then added three unearned runs in the fifth to stretch it to 8-0. The Bobcats scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run home run by Quinnipiac right-fielder Ryan Rizzo to make it 8-2. Zaneski and sophomore left-fielder C.J. Simons cracked back-to-back two-out solo homers in the top of the eighth to make it 10-2. Rhode Island tacked on four more runs with two-outs in the top of the ninth. Two runs on a triple by Scott Brown and two more on a homer by junior first baseman Ryan Cunningham to make it 14-2. The Bobcats added three runs in the ninth inning including two on a two-run home run by Quinnipiac second baseman Randy Gress.

Sophomore Jamie Degidio (5-0) picked up the win for the Rams after pitching six innings giving up only two runs on eight hits while striking out four. 

The Rams travel to Providence to take on Brown in a make up doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.
