Baseball Overpowers Dayton, 10-8

KINGSTON, RI - The University of Rhode Island defeated Dayton, 10-8 on Friday afternoon at Bill Beck field in Kingston. The Rams were led by junior first baseman Ryan Cunningham who went 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored.

The Rams opened the game with a run in the first inning on a single up the middle by Cunningham to score senior left fielder Daryl Holcomb. Dayton battled back scoring one run in each of the second and third innings to take a 2-1 lead.

Rhody answered back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the third. Cunningham doubled down the left field line to score senior second baseman Wayne Russo, the play also scored Scott Brown due to a fielding error. Cunningham then scored on a single up the middle by senior catcher Josh Nestor who later scored on a single by freshman Greg Allen.

Dayton tied the game in the fifth as they scored three runs on three hits to make the score 5-5. Rhody scored in the bottom of the fifth on a homerun to right center by Allen but once again found themselves in a tie with the Flyers after Dayton scored another run in the top of the sixth.

The Rams scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on a double down the left field line by Cunningham scoring Russo and a sacrifice fly by sophomore shortstop Shaun Hagey to plate junior right fielder Scott Brown.

The Rams final two runs of the game came on homeruns. The first was by junior center fielder Dave Savard in the seventh and the second was hit by Cunningham in the eighth.

Senior Tom Venedam came on in relief to pick up the win for the Rams and sophomore Brett Palanski earned the save.

The Rams (25-9, 10-4 A-10) face the Flyers (24-15, 12-4 A-10) on Saturday at 12:00 pm and again on Sunday at 11:00 pm.
