STORRS, Conn. - Rhode Island senior catcher Josh Nestor went 2 for 2 with a grand slam in the fifth inning, but it was Connecticut taking the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader, 9-5.
Trailing 6-0, Nestor's fourth round-tripper of the season capped a five-run rally in the fifth inning that pulled the Rams within a run. URI plated its first run of the day after sophomore third baseman Shaun Hagey was also hit by a pitch and force senior left fielder Daryl Holcomb in from third. Nestor followed with his base-clearing drive to make the score 6-5.
UConn (34-16-1) would respond with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, followed by one more in the sixth to put the scheduled seven-inning game out of reach.
Sophomore starter Matthew Bruderek was charged with the loss, allowing three hits and three runs (two earned) while walking two in an inning of work.
