KINGSTON, R.I. -
The University of Rhode Island volleyball team (1-3) opened up the first day of the Rhode Island Invitational with a 3-1 (27-30, 31-29, 30-22, 30-24) loss to Northeastern (1-3) at Keaney Gymnasium on Thursday, August 31. Three different Rams tallied double-digit kills but the effort was not enough to fend off the Huskies who recorded their first win of the season with a come-from-behind victory over Rhode Island.
The senior trio of Inga Schlet (Sundern, Germany), Ivy Zuidhof (Lethbridge, Alberta, Can.) and Rachel Bello (Wycoff, N.J.) led the way for the Rams with 13, 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Bello also recorded 12 digs for Rhode Island's only double-double of the night. URI also had a good showing from junior Kaira Kachadurian (Fresno, Calif.), who posted a match-high 38 assists and sophomore Leslie Wiekamp (Laguna Niguel, Calif.), who notched a match-high 28 digs.
Despite coming out strong and posting a 30-27 win in the first game, the Rams were unable to hold onto the advantage as the Huskies battled back to claim the next three games and post their first match victory of the season.
With the loss Rhode Island falls to 1-3 on the season while the Huskies improve to 1-3.
Day two of the Rhode Island Invitational is set to begin on Friday, September 1, with an 11:00 a.m. match between Akron and Pittsburgh. Akron will then take on Northeastern at 4:30 p.m., followed by a meeting between Rhode Island and Pittsburgh at 7:00 p.m.
