New Haven, Conn. Rhode Island sophomore libero Leslie Wiekamp totaled a match-high 33 digs but it was Central Connecticut coming back for a 3-2 (30-23, 30-17, 31-33, 22-30, 20-22) victory over the Rams in the final match of the Yale Invitational, Saturday.
Wiekamp was named to the All-Tournament Team after leading the Rams in digs in all three of their matches. She also compiled a match-high 23 digs versus Yale on Friday and added a match-high 18 digs versus Albany earlier on Saturday.
Senior Inga Schlecht had a double-double with 22 kills and 14 digs and sophomore Jillian Bekke led both teams with 25 kills against Yale.
Senior middle blocker Ivy Zuidhof tallied 15 kills and seven digs and freshman Caitlyn Welsh had 11 kills and four blocks. Senior setter Lindsay St. John was credited with 35 assists, nine kills and seven digs.
The Rams won the first two games against Central Connecticut before dropping the next two. Trailing 6-1 to start the fifth and final game, the Rams battled back to tie the score, 14-14. The Rams had two opportunities to win the match but the Blue Devils held on for the 22-20 win.
The Rams (3-13) will look to rebound against La Salle in their Atlantic 10 opener this Friday in Philadelphia at 7:00 pm.
