STORRS, Conn. - The Rhode Island baseball team was defeated, 4-1, by Connecticut on Wednesday afternoon, April 11, at J.O. Christian Field in Storrs, Conn. The Rams combined for a season-low three hits in the loss.
Rhody opened the scoring in the first inning as junior Shaun Hagey (Ephrata, Pa.) led off with a walk after being down by an 0-2 count and then advanced to second on senior Dave Savard's (Nashua, N.H.) ground out to first. Hagey took third on a wild pitch by UConn's Brendan McGinn and put Rhody up, 1-0, on junior Zach Zaneski's (Waterford, Conn.) ground out to short stop.
Redshirt senior starter Adam Perkins (Hudson, N.H.) opened with two scoreless innings for the Rams, giving up just two hits to go along with three strikeouts. Junior Brett Palanski (Nashua, N.H.) manned the mound in the third and fourth, striking out two and allowing just one hit.
The Huskies took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning on four hits against senior James Norcott (Norton, Mass.) and plated an unearned run against freshman Eric Smith (Milford, Conn.) in the sixth. With two outs and runners on first and third, freshman Mark Fraser (Nashua, N.H.) took the mound and got Rhody out of the inning when UConn's Pat Mahoney tied himself up between third and home. Fraser got the ball to Zaneski at the plate and Zaneski fired down to Hagey who tagged Mahoney out to end the sixth.
Freshman Oliver Palmer (North Kingstown, R.I.) recorded his second hit of the game in the top of the seventh and senior Dan Tucker (Warwick, R.I) doubled in the eighth, but neither reached the plate as URI fell to UConn, 4-1.
Rhody returns to action on Friday, April 13 for the first of three games against 25th-ranked Charlotte. The Rams and 49ers will take the field at 3:00 p.m. on Friday and at noon, for a doubleheader, on Saturday.
