Rams Sweep Play At Hartford Invitational

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The University of Rhode Island swept through three matches this weekend at the Hartford Volleyball Invitational.

For their efforts, both Lauren McIntosh and Caitlyn Welsh were named to the all-tournament team. McIntosh earned MVP honors for her play.

On Friday, Aug. 31, the Rams earned a 3-2 victory over Central Connecticut (30-22, 19-30, 30-27, 19-30, 15-11). Welsh led URI with 15 kills, while Amy Mellard had 12 and McIntosh 10. McIntosh registered a .364 hitting percentage during the match (10k, 2e, 22att.).

Setter Kaira Kachadurian recorded a double-double with 42 assists and 11 digs. Along with her total, four other URI players registered double figures in the dig column, led by 15 apiece from Lindsay Lytle and Peggy Doino.

For the match, Rhody shot .161 (58k, 30e, 174 att.) while serving seven aces and tallying eight total blocks.

On Saturday, Sept. 1, URI downed host Hartford, 3-0 (30-18, 30-17, 30-27). Welsh and McIntosh again led the Rams with nine kills each. Both had outstanding hitting percentages, as Welsh shot .421 (9k, 1e, 19att.) and McIntosh .533 (9k, 1e, 15att.). For the match, Rhody shot .253 (39k, 15e, 95att.), while tallying eight service aces, and 13 total blocks (3 solo, 10 assisted). Kachadurian notched 29 assists and Lytle led the way with 13 digs.

In their second match of the day, the Rams defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-0 (30-19, 30-24, 30-23). McIntosh was outstanding again, recording a team-best 11 kills while hitting .611 for the match (11k, 0e, 18att.). Kayla Newberg was also a key to the Rhody victory, notching 10 kills, to just one error, in 17 swing attempts (.529). Kachadurian had her second double-double of the weekend with 25 assists and 13 digs. Lytle and Doino also added 13 digs apiece. Rhody shot .229 (44k, 14e, 131att.), with 10 service aces and 17 total blocks (1 solo, 16 assisted).

The Rams, now 4-2, return to action on Sept. 7 at the Yale Invitational in New Haven, Conn.
