Rhode Island Sweeps Charlotte in Atlantic 10 Volleyball Opener

KINGSTON, R.I. - Freshman Caitlyn Welsh (Narragansett, R.I.) tallied 11 kills and 11 digs to lead the University of Rhode Island to a 3-0 win over Charlotte in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams Friday night at Kearney Gym. The Rams captured game one 30-21, game two 30-27, and game three 30-25.

Classmate Amy Mellard (Overland Park, Kas.) added 10 kills and five digs for the Rams, who snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 8-6 (1-0 Atlantic 10) with the win. Alma Arroyo notched a match-high 15 kills for the 49ers, who dropped their fourth-straight match to fall to 8-6 (0-1 Atlantic 10).

Rhode Island opened the match posting a solid .308 hitting pct., but the 49ers held the Rams to just .081 in the second game. The Rams rallied after the break and hit .350 in the final game and held the 49ers to a hitting percentage of just .070. The Rams also posted 14 blocks on the evening, compared to just six for Charlotte.

Freshman Lauren McIntosh (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also had a solid night for the Rams, recording eight kills and four blocks, while senior Kaira Kachadurian (Fresno, Calif.) and freshman Lindsay Lytle (Sebastopol, Calif.) combined for 31 assists.

The Rams return to action this Sunday when they host George Washington at 1 p.m.
