Volleyball Falls at Home to Saint Louis, 3-1

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island volleyball team (8-9 overall; 0-3 Atlantic 10) dropped its third straight conference match on Friday as it fell to Saint Louis, 3-1.

Two URI players registered double-figures in kills as junior Caitlyn Welsh (Narragansett, R.I.) lead the way with 13 terminations. This season, Welsh leads the team with 200 kills. In addition, the URI outside hitter has recorded 10-or-more kills in her last five matches.

Sophomore Lauren McIntosh (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also reached double figures in kills as she totaled 10. McIntosh has now registered double-digits in kills in four of her last five matches.

Defensively, senior Peggy Doino (Deer Park, N.Y.) led the way with a match-high 17 digs.

Saint Louis opened the match with a 25-21 win in the first frame, but the Rams responded with a 25-23 triumph in game two to even the match.

In game three, Saint Louis defeated Rhode Island 26-24. URI and SLU began the set by trading points and were tied at 18 apiece as no team led by more than two points. The Rams would then go on to win five of the next six points to take a 23-19, but SLU responded by winning eight of the last nine points to claim the frame.

The Billikens closed out the match as they defeated the Rams 25-20 in game four.

Rhode Island returns to action on Saturday at home as it takes on Duquesne at 5 p.m.
