Volleyball Defeats Duquesne at Home, 3-1

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island volleyball team (9-9 overall; 1-3 Atlantic 10) downed Duquesne at home on Saturday, 3-1 and picked up its first conference victory.

Three URI players registered double-figures in kills as junior Caitlyn Welsh (Narragansett, R.I.) led the way with 18 terminations, while posting an attack percentage of .341. Welsh has recorded 10-or-more kills in her last five matches.

Sophomore Lauren McIntosh (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and freshman Kayla Newberg (Deer Park, Wash.) also reached double figures in kills as they totaled 13 and 10 kills, respectively. McIntosh has now registered double-digits in kills in five of her last six matches.

Defensively, senior Peggy Doino (Deer Park, N.Y.) led the way with a match-high 25 digs. This season Doino has tallied 20-or-more kills in five matches this season.

The Rams outhit the Dukes .258-.153 and held a 61-41 advantage in kills.

URI fell in game one 25-23, but responded by winning the next three frames (25-22, 25-20 and 25-21).

Rhode Island travels to Southwest Ohio to faceoff against Dayton on Oct. 17 (7:00 p.m.) and Xavier on Oct. 18 (5:30 p.m.).
