KINGSTON, R.I. - Junior Caitlyn Welsh tallied a season-high 22 kills, but it was not enough as the Rhode Island volleyball team (9-10 overall; 1-4 Atlantic 10) fell on the road against Dayton, 3-2.
Welsh's (Narragansett, R.I.) 22 kills marked the seventh straight match in which she has reached 10-or-more terminations. Welsh also recorded an attack percentage of .360. Welsh's attack percentage was her highest mark this season since the Rams' match against Holy Cross (Sept. 17).
Defensively, senior Peggy Doino (Deer Park, N.Y.) led the way with a match-high 16 digs.
Dayton opened the match with a 25-16 triumph, but Rhode Island fought back to claim a 25-19 victory in the second set, outhitting the Flyers .364-.140. The Flyers responded with a 25-21 to take a 2-1 lead.
Rhode Island evened the match at two sets apiece with a 25-21 win in the fourth frame. Dayton would go on to close out the match in the fifth set, defeating URI 15-10.
Rhode Island returns to action at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday against Xavier.
