KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island volleyball team (10-11 overall; 2-5 Atlantic 10) snapped its two-match losing streak as it swept Charlotte on the road, 3-0.
URI's 3-0 victory over Charlotte marks the third time this season the Rams have swept an opponent. Earlier this year, the Rams swept Morgan State (Aug. 29) and Stony Brook (Sept. 4).
Junior Caitlyn Welsh (Narragansett, R.I.) led the team offensively with 14 kills. Welsh also tallied 12 digs to record her 12th double-double on the year. In addition, the URI outside hitter tied a season-high hitting percentage of .462.
Defensively, senior Peggy Doino (Deer Park, N.Y.) led the way with a team-high 14 digs.
The Rams opened the match with a 25-20 victory in the first set and held the 49ers to an attack percentage of .026.
URI would then take a 2-0 lead after it downed Charlotte 25-22. In the second frame, the Rams posted a .444 hitting percentage. URI would then close out the match in the third set 25-19.
Rhode Island returns to action on Sunday as it heads to George Washington. The match is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
