Volleyball Outlasts Central Connecticut State, 3-2

New Britain, Conn. - The Rhode Island volleyball team (8-8 overall; 0-2 Atlantic 10) collected its second straight victory on Tuesday as it downed Central Connecticut State, 3-2.

Two URI players reached double-figures in kills with junior Caitlyn Welsh (Narragansett, R.I.) leading the way with a match-high 14 terminations. Welsh currently leads the team with 187 kills.

Sophomore Lauren McIntosh (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also chipped in with 13 kills. McIntosh has now registered double-digit kill totals in three of her last four matches. The URI sophomore also posted a match-high hitting percentage of .360.

Defensively, senior Peggy Doino (Deer Park, N.Y.) led the way with a match-high 16 digs. Welsh also added 14 digs to record her ninth double-double on the year.

Offensively, URI outhit CCSU .178-.137 as a team. The Rams also recorded more kills than the Blue Devils (56-53).

The Rams opened the match by winning game one 25-20, but the Blue Devils responded by winning the next two frames (25-20 game two; 25-21 game three) to take a 2-1 lead. In game four, URI defeated CCSU 25-20 and held CCSU to just -.029 hitting in the frame to even the match.

URI fell behind 3-0 in the early going of game five, but the Rams would even the frame at eight points apiece. URI would then win seven of the last nine points to win the match 15-10.

Rhode Island steps back into conference play this weekend as it plays host to Saint Louis on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Duquesne on Saturday (5:00 p.m.).
