Volleyball Sweeps Xavier at Home, 3-0

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island volleyball team (12-11 overall; 4-5 Atlantic 10) collected its third straight conference victory as it defeated Xavier at home, 3-0.

URI's 3-0 victory over Xavier marks the fourth time this season the Rams have swept an opponent. Earlier this year, the Rams swept Morgan State (Aug. 29), Stony Brook (Sept. 4) and Charlotte (Oct. 24).

Sophomore Kayla Newberg (Deer Park, Wash.) led the team offensively with 11 kills. Defensively, senior Peggy Doino (Deer Park, N.Y.) led the way with a team-high seven digs.

The Rams opened the match with a 26-24 victory in the first set. URI trailed 23-21, but the Rams would go on to win five of the last six points to take an early 1-0 lead.

URI would then take a 2-0 lead after it downed XU 25-20. The Rams would then close out the match in the third set with a 25-15 triumph. Rhode Island outhit Xavier .440-.286.

Rhode Island returns to action on Sunday as it welcomes Dayton to Keaney Gymnasium. The match is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
