Volleyball Sweeps Providence on the Road

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Rhode Island volleyball team (14-13 overall; 5-7 Atlantic 10) defeated in-state rival Providence in three straight sets on Wednesday night.

URI's 3-0 sweep over PC gave the Rams their 14th win of the year, surpassing last year win's total of 13. The win also improved URI to 8-5 in road matches this season.

Sophomore Kayla Newberg (Deer Park, Wash.) and junior Caitlyn Welsh (Narragansett, R.I.) both reached double figures in kills recording 11 and 10, respectively.

Welsh also tallied 12 digs to post her 15th double-double on the year (kills and digs). This season, the Rams are 9-6 when Welsh reaches double figures in kills and digs.

Defensively for the Rams, senior Peggy Doino (Deer Park, N.Y.) led the way with a match-high 15 digs. In 2008, Doino leads the squad with 455 digs.

URI opened the match with a 25-16 triumph in the first set. The Rams would then go on to claim the second frame 25-22, despite being outhit .109-.089 by the Friars.

The Rams closed out the match in the third set with a 27-25 victory.

Rhode Island steps back into conference action on Saturday at 4 p.m. as it welcomes Fordham for its final home match of the year.
