Volleyball Defeats Duquesne 3-1 on the Road

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Rhode Island volleyball team (13-12 overall; 5-6 Atlantic 10) collected its fourth win in its last five matches as it defeated Duquesne 3-1 on the road.

Junior Caitlyn Welsh (Narragansett, R.I.) led the team offensively with a match-high 15 kills. This season, Welsh leads the squad with 308 kills (3.08 kpg).

Defensively for the Rams, senior Peggy Doino (Deer Park, N.Y.) led the way with a team-high 29 digs. In 2008, Doino leads the squad with 419 digs.

URI captured the first set 25-23. The Rams trailed 22-20 in the opening frame, but would go on to win five of the next six points to take a 1-0 lead.

In the second set, URI once again found themselves behind down the stretch as it trailed 20-18, but the Rams won seven of the last 10 points to take a 2-0 advantage.

Duquesne fought back in the third set as it collected a 25-20 victory, but the Rams would go on to close out the match in the fourth set with a 25-22 triumph.

Rhode Island returns to action on Sunday as it heads to Saint Louis. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
