Runnin Rams Shoot Past Rhode Island College, 109-69

KINGSTON, R.I. - Senior Jimmy Baron connected on six 3-pointers to lead the Rhode Island men's basketball team to a 109-69 victory over Rhode Island College in its final exhibition game.

Baron scored 17 (East Greenwich, R.I.) of his game-high 26 points in the second half and was one of five URI players to reach double figures. Five of Baron's six 3-pointer came in the second half.

"We are still learning about ourselves," said head coach Jim Baron. "We are going to learn a lot more in the next couple of months. We need to work on our rebounding. Our bench did a great job and we didn't miss a beat."

In two preseason games, the Rams outscored their opponents 232-153.

URI junior Keith Cothran (New Haven, Conn.) added 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Cothran scored 12 points in the first half.

As a team, the Rams outshot RIC 61.4-40.0 percent. In the second half, URI shot 69.4 percent from the field and connected at a 70 percent clip from beyond the arc en route to 61 points.

"I will take 61 percent shooting any day," Baron said. "We have the athleticism and depth to add on to what we have done over the past two years."

The Anchormen took a 5-0 advantage to begin the game, but the Rams would fight back and take its first lead at 8-7 with 16:54 remaining. URI would then take the lead for good with 14:44 (13-10) to go in the first half.

URI tallied an 8-2 run to close out the first half and took a 48-30 lead into the locker room. Rhody held a 27-16 points in the paint advantage and hit at a 52 percent clip from the field.

Rhody went on a 12-5 run to begin the second half and took a 60-37 lead with 17:03 to go in the game. Four minutes later, the Rams extended their advantage to 31 points to secure the win.

The Rams open their regular-season schedule at home against Brown. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
